Summer Reading
Reading is the single most important thing you can do during the summer months to help retain and improve the reading skills that have been developing throughout the school year. In fact, “studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read will gain skills” (www.readingrockets.org, 2022).
To that end, please make a concentrated effort to read 20-30 minutes each day this summer. Take advantage of programs offered at the Valley Community Library and check out the following resources for additional reading lists, resources and summer reading challenges:

Glossary of Literary Terms:
Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Prevention Month ■
Every life matters. Every voice matters. Together, we can make a difference.
■ Know the Signs:
- Talking about wanting to die or feeling hopeless
- Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities
- Big changes in mood, behavior, or sleep
- Feeling like a burden to others
■ What You Can Do:
- Pay attention if something feels “off”
- Show care and kindness — small gestures matter
- Tell a trusted adult right away (parent, teacher, counselor, coach, or school social worker)
- You do not need to handle this alone — adults and professionals are here to help
■ You Are Not Alone:
■ Call or text 988 — Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (24/7)
■ Text HOME to 741741 — Crisis Text Line
■ Talk to a trusted adult at school or at home
■ Your story matters. Your life matters.
This month, and every month, let’s stand together for hope, help, and healing.
